Always assume that a mushroom is poisonous unless you have purchased it in a store or you have had a trained expert identify it.  Most species that are even considered 'magic'-al are ones that can easily kill you.  

As it is, most of those that grow in the cooler regions of the US at this time of the year are poisonous.

Most mushrooms species are poisonous.  Some common ones can kill you with just one bite even though squirrels eat them.

There is no such thing as a 'typical mushroom'!   If you need to ask this question you should under no circumstances try them.  Not that many mushrooms are poisonous, but one or two of the ones that are will kill you, and without any hope of an antidote.  Maybe 48 hours after you eat them.  Others can send you raving insane or just cause agonizing stomach upsets.
