So my friend asked me to work for her. She had 100 A4 page document which she wanted to make a word document. They didn't have a file, so I scanned all pages. Then all pages needed to be edited to make like the original one (Title/ Character/ Caps editing). Especially there were some graphs that the scanner didn't get right picture, that I had spent so much time to make it like the original. It took about..30 hours for total. My friend told me that she wants to know how many hours I worked for this, and she could pay for them.

Question1: Do you think 30 hours is normal for this kind of work? I just didn't want asking too much money. Since I did this whenever I had free time, It's hard for me to tell how many hours this work is required.

Question2: How much do you think I should charge? FYI, I am administrative assistant for my day job that have a pretty good computer skill for Word. 10/hour sounds good?

  1. Answer 1: No I don't think 30 hours is unusual; I'm certain you put in that many hours, based on what you describe.

Answer 2: Professional typing services, or commonly referred to as desktop publishing services charge $45 to $80 an hour or more. However, since you don't have overhead and you did it "in your free time" you may come down a little but I wouldn't go less than $25 an hour!

Look at it this way: if your friend had to do it herself it would have taken her that much time--or more, to do it. Therefore she hired a professional with a "pretty good computer skill for Word." Don't sell yourself short!!
