Tyre manufacturer Pirelli says teams will struggle less with 2013 compounds – Formula 1 news
Tyre manufacturer Pirelli’s motorsport boss Paul Hembery has said that Formula 1 teams will struggle less with the 2013 tyre compounds.
Pirelli returned to the sport in the 2011 Formula 1 season and teams have since struggled to understand the compounds properly. The correct tyre temperature window was even smaller in the 2012 season and quite a few teams struggled with them.
However, Paul Hembery of Pirelli thinks the teams will struggle less with regards to the 2013 compounds and can afford to be more aggressive with them.
“Because the cars are staying relatively stable, the teams are coming from a pretty solid platform in understanding what they are working with,” Hembery told Autosport. “We are changing the structure of the tyres, changing all the four compounds and being
more aggressive, and that will possibly create some challenges initially. But we don't foresee the issues that they had in 2012, when the car changes were so dramatic.”
There have been no major changes with regards to the car specifications for the upcoming season of Formula 1 which begins in March. This is why Hembery is of the opinion that the stability of the new tyres will allow them to make more aggressive compound
choices in the 2013 season.
He said, “The rules haven't changed, so we are not going to follow exactly the same format. We are trying to be more aggressive this season.”
The first pre-season test of the 2013 Formula 1 season will begin in the first week of February in Jerez. The teams will have four days to give their new cars a shakedown before they will be allowed two more such tests to fine-tune their new machines and
get ready for the season opening race which will be held in Melbourne, Australia in the last week of March.
The 2012 season witnessed quite close competition as the title battle came all the way to the last race of the season. Since there have been no major technical changes for the 2013 campaign, lets expect another thrilling competition between the teams on
the grid.
