Tyreke Evans: I want to set up practice sessions for the Sacramento Kings – NBA Report
Sacramento Kings rising star Tyreke Evans has said that he will try and get his teammates together or group practice sessions soon. The young player has taken a hint from Zach Randolph of the Memphis Grizzlies and Amar’e Stoudemire
of the New York Knicks, who have both set up plans for team practices during the lockout.
As part of the lockout NBA franchises and coaches are barred from contacting players, therefore no team practices are expected to take place until the lockout ends. The players know that it could be a while before that happens,
and with even games being threatened it is unlikely there will be time for teams to set-up practice camps.
Evans knows this and believes it is up to the players themselves to get together and workout in order to prepare for next season, whenever that starts.
“I was thinking about that, calling some of the players up, trying to get them to Sacramento early. I know it’s going to be pretty hard for the rookies because they haven’t set up yet with (homes). But I mean, the guys that have
been playing, the veterans and the guys who have been playing a couple years on our team…I was definitely thinking of calling them up and (trying) to get a local gym in Sacramento and having a training camp.”
The step by Evans is an important one and could be a clue as to where this young Sacramento team is headed. Evans is a very talented player and won the Rookie of the Year award when he came onto the NBA scene. However his progress
was halted last season, mainly because of injuries. The player has since recovered and earlier stated that he is looking forward to the coming season.
Now with the move to set up a training camp for his teammates, Evans is showing the potential to be a leader on a Sacramento side devoid of money. The Kings have a talented roster but they have often been classified as a wayward
and unfocused bunch.
Players like DeMarcus Cousins and John Salmons have plenty of talent but Cousins is not known to be a fan of hard work and Salmons suffers from a tendency to shoot first pass later. Additionally, there will be two new faces on
the roster next season that are bound to be a major part of the team.
Rookie Jimmer Fredette comes with a huge reputation and is someone Evans would have to compete with for the spot of starting point guard. Also coming in is J.J. Hickson, a forward traded on the deadline from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Therefore the Kings need to spend as much time together as they can before the start of the season.
