Tyreke Evans in the dark over his role for Sacramento Kings next season – NBA Update
There always seem to be issues with the Sacramento Kings. Whether it is the off court situation about a new arena or on court communication, it isn’t clear what is going to happen. Now Tyreke Evans has come out to ask the question, which is actually on the mind of a lot of people:
How will the Kings play him next season?
The question stems from Sacramento’s draft day capture of one Jimmer Fredette. Jimmer comes with a large college fan base as well as a reputation of being a scoring oriented point guard, a role currently played by Tyreke Evans for the Kings.
So Evans went straight to the point,
“I don’t know how we are playing it,” Evans said. “Am I going to be the point? Is he going to be the point? At the end of the day, whatever one they lead me to, I’m just ready.”
That’s a question Sacramento should have asked themselves before going after Jimmer Fredette. Evans is a quality young player and will certainly be a top point guard sooner rather than later. The 6-foot-6 player won the Rookie of the Year award in 2010 and it was only through injuries that he couldn’t carry on his good work last season.
He is fit now and raring to go, but finds Jimmer standing in his way. Add John Salmons to the mix, another trigger happy guard who likes to make his own shots, and you have three guys basically for one job.
Therefore one can understand the confusion in Evans mind. The problem however is that things are not likely to get clearer any time soon. The Kings management or coach should have picked up the phone and talked to Evans before July 1.
Now that the league is in lockout, the officials and backroom staff of the Kings are barred from talking to Evans. Actually they can’t even talk about any NBA player. So for now, Evans can only guess what will happen next season.
Sacramento have assembled an interesting mix for the coming season, with not only Evans, Fredette and Salmon, but also J.J. Hickson and DeMarcus Cousins. The latter two have the potential to form an exciting frontline, but are both young at the moment and Cousins has repeatedly shown he has an attitude issue.
One more thing is that with all these young players who have quite some talent and very less experience, who is going to be the guiding hand on the court. Also, who is actually going to distribute the ball rather than just dribble and take shots?
These are the questions that the Kings have to ask themselves, if they are to improve upon their performances last season.
