Tyrone Corbin and Utah Jazz – A new beginning awaits next season: NBA Feature
Utah Jazz had a drastic end to the 2010-2011 season, one which featured a number of setbacks for the team during the year. The Hall of Famer Jerry Sloan, who has been spearheading the organization for more than a decade as a head
coach, decided to call it quits in February. Few days after the retirement of the legendary coach, Sloan’s long time assistant, Phil Johnson also parted ways with Utah Jazz.
After suffering two major losses, Jazz encountered another split which turned their roster upside down. All Star point guard Deron Williams, who was selected by Utah as the third overall pick during the 2005 NBA Draft, took divorce
from the franchise and shifted his talent to the New Jersey Nets.
At this shattering situation, the 48-year-old Tyrone Corbin took over the responsibilities of the head coaching position and finished the season for Utah Jazz. When the trio left, Utah still had a chance to clinch a play-off berth
in the Western Conference, but as expected, they failed to do so and finished the season with 39 wins.
The losses suffered by Utah in the last season would have simply rattled an average NBA franchise. However Jazz is far from an average franchise and they have been a competitive force. National Basketball Association is experiencing
lockout at the moment. Whenever the next NBA season tips off, a new face will open the season for the Utah Jazz as in charge for the first time after 23 years of splendid tenure of Jerry Sloan.
Corbin is geared up to guide Utah into transition and he has a number of options available on the table to strengthen the team to become play-off contenders once again. Tyrone has two veteran powers on the roster Paul Millsap and
Al Jefferson to guide the young players in the team.
Jazz acquired Derrick Favors and power forward Devin Harris against the trade of Williams. Harris is a seasoned campaigner and his experience on the court will certainly fill the leadership void left by the departure of Williams.
Favours has failed to deliver as yet in his short career, but he has the required talent which Corbin needs to polish off.
On top of that, Utah Jazz have drafted two prolific players, University of Kentucky’s superstar Enes Kanter and the scoring threat Alec Berks in this year’s NBA Draft. Kanter plays centre position and have the potential to power
the team from both the ends of the court while Alen Burks will team up with Millsap and Al Jefferson to run the offensive system of the team.
Tyrone Corbin definitely has a number of talented players in the team he can work with in his first full season with Utah Jazz. Although the Western Conference is full of powerful, however Jazz is not any average team and has the
potential to compete against the elites.
