Tyrur McGuigan crowned the new Irish Derby champion
Tyrur McGuigan landed connections with Europe’s largest prize after racing to perfection in the Irish Derby final at Shelbourne tonight.
The Conor Fahy-trained youngster clocked a tidy time of 29.41sec over the 550 yards trip to crown himself as the new champion in the €120,000 decider.
Picking a winner for the final was always going to be tricky business, but one thing which was always going to be crucial to winning the race was good use of early pace - something which McGuigan used wisely from the trap three box to take the early advantage and finish well to beat Tyrur Big Mike (favourite) by a clear three lengths.
Anyone studying the forum would have picked up on both brothers acquiring great use of early pace throughout the competition, yet Big Mike was priced at evens and McGuigan a very large 8-1.
It was near enough an act of Déjà vu for Fraser Black’s Krug Ninety Five who produced the same finish tonight as in this year’s English Derby final at Wimbledon when taking third place in 29.67sec.
The other finalist failed to make the break hoped for, but all credit goes to the trainers for reaching this stage of the competition, which itself alone is a big accomplishment.
