Tyson Cave retains WBC Continental Americas gold by nailing Jovanny Soto unanimously - Boxing news
Tyson Cave, the surging Canadian number one bantamweight, successfully defended and retained his prestigious WBC Continental Americas super bantamweight gold against the Mexican Jovanny Soto, by collecting unanimous decision in a 10-round skirmish held on
March 24, 2012.
The ring for the event was stretched at Tyson’s hometown arena Halifax Forum Multi-Purpose Centre situated in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Tyson, also known as the ‘Prince of Hali’, was entering in his career’s 19th bout. The Halifax proud was seriously
outclassed by his opponent’s experience but this did not intimidate the Prince, who boasted 16 wins in his resume.
Cave has collected just two losses in his career to date, against AJ Banal and Willie Casey. His recent loss, against Banal, was a significant one since Tyson not only lost the bout but also a chance to become the owner of the prestigious WBO Asia Pacific
bantamweight title.
Tyson became the Continental Americas super bantamweight champion in 2011 when he took on Nestor Bolum with the vacant title up for the grabs since then this was the first time that the Halifax prince was defending his gold and against a man with the reputation
of being a lethal knockout specialist, Jovanny Soto.
Soto, also known as the ‘Bambino’, boasted a hefty experience of 45 bouts. The 27-year-old Jovanny has collected 32 wins, 12 losses, and one draw. The Mexican pounder was dubbed as the man who will pummel Tyson brutally and will engrave infinite lacerations
on his face but the whole crowd and even the critics were mesmerised on witnessing the impressive pugilism put forth by Tyson.
Tyson, who has collected just five of his total wins by knockout as compared to Soto’s huge 27, was advised by most to remain on the defensive mode but Soto’s poor performance, sluggish footwork, and penetrable defence provoked Tyson to move forward and
charge with great might and fury.
The bout seemed to be a one-sided sparring session since Tyson was the one who connected large number of well targeted jabs and Soto remained on the back foot. The bout ended and all three designated judges allocated 100-90 unanimously in favour of Tyson.
After the bout, Cave proudly commented, “I outboxed him, I made him look like a fool, I even did the waltz with him. What can I say? I’m the best bantamweight from 119-126 pounds in the world.”
While expressing his future plans, Cave simply said that he wants to take on another big name in June to move up in the rankings. Tyson remarked, “I want to move up in the rankings and am looking for another elite fight. I don’t care who it is because I
am ready. I had a great training camp with Bunny Phillips and Karim Collett and the power’s coming.”
Cave now has 17 wins in a total 19 skirmishes and Soto, unfortunately, has collected his career’s 13th loss.
