Tyson Chandler at the double as New York Knicks thrash Detroit Pistons 101 – 79 – NBA Recap
The New York Knicks on Saturday handed out a resounding defeat to the Detroit Pistons. The Knicks won 101 – 79 at the Madison Square Garden as they regained the momentum under new coach Mike Woodson after a hiccup on Friday.
New York produced a complete team performance for the victory as 5 players got into double digits. Tyson Chandler was perhaps the most impressive as he recorded a massive double-double, scoring 15 points to go along with 17 rebounds.
Amar’e Stoudemire had 17 points while star forward Carmelo Anthony managed 15 after the Knicks tried to force the offense through him.
"I opened up the second half with two plays to get Carmelo closer to the bucket and he delivered both times, as a coach, I have to help him. That's my job. I'm willing to continue to work with him and try to put him in the best position possible to be successful
to help us win."
Jeremy Lin and J.R. Smith were the other players to get into double-digits.
Ben Gordon, 20 points, and Greg Monroe, 12 points, were the only Detroit players to reach double figures on the night, a testament to the team’s overall struggle.
"They dominated the paint," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. "You look at it, they were plus-20 points in the paint, plus-24 in the boards. They had 18 offensive rebounds. I think they had seven steals in the fourth quarter. It's frustrating. You got to
give them credit but they were definitely the aggressors in the paint, which hurts."
The game was very slow at the start and the score was low and close early in the first quarter. The Knicks then started to pick up pace, an 11 – 2 run gave them the 17 – 9 lead. Detroit reduced the gap to 21 – 17 before the period ended.
Pistons’ woes though were only just beginning. The Knicks were again the aggressors in the second period and they increased their lead substantially as time the quarter progressed. At half time, they were up by double-digits at 49 – 37.
The Pistons had a more determined look about them coming out of the interval but things simply wouldn’t go their way. They managed to score 24 points in the 3rd frame but also leaked 27 to the Knicks, who were in complete control before the final
period began, 76 – 61.
An expected rally from the Pistons never materialized afterwards either. The Knicks strolled through the last 12 minutes, even stretching the lead to over 20 points and ended the game at 101 – 79.
