Tyson Chandler doesn’t expect to stay at Dallas Mavericks – NBA Update
The Dallas Mavericks could be short of one of their most influential members from last season’s NBA World Championship winning campaign when they return to training camp.
Centre Tyson Chandler has revealed that he doesn’t expect to be with the Mavericks once the new season begins.
The centre was only signed by Mavericks last season and is played a big role in changing the team’s fortunes. His defensive prowess was a big factor in the Mavericks clinching the NBA title for the first time in their history while
he also complemented the Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki fantastically well.
That partnership though is likely to come to an end soon, as Chandler doesn’t even think he will train again with the Mavericks.
"I really think I'm going to be on a new team come training camp," Chandler told ESPN.com in a telephone interview Wednesday night. "I'm really taking a hard look at all of my options, trying to see what best suits me."
Chandler based his comments on the fact that Dallas have seemed hesitant to offer him a new contract so far. The free agent believed his impressive shift last season would have warranted a deal by now but an offer has not been
forthcoming from the Mavericks so far.
Indeed, Tyson is already looking ahead. He always stated that the Mavericks have a special place in his heart as he was proud to be part of the group that won a title against all offs last season. His first preference was always
going to be Dallas. However, it seems as if the player has got a clear indication already from the franchise as to his future, and he wants it confirmed by next week.
"I would like this to be settled by early next week," Chandler said. "I want to be in camp with my new teammates as soon as possible."
Dallas in the meantime have not been entirely open about the issue. The team stated that it would like to hold onto key players from last season, but owner Mark Cuban knows that with a new Collective Bargaining Agreement he would
have a tough act to balance.
Cuban said he was studying the new CBA and the rule changes pertaining to the salary cap. Only after he knows what he can and cannot do, will he make a move.
"We are going through and digesting all the new rules and waiting on others. Once everything is in place we will have a far better idea on what we can and can't do. In the meanwhile, we certainly are going to be talking to everyone's
agent." Cuban told ESPN.
The Mavericks have a number of players with expired contracts and would have their hands full in the free agency.
