Tyson Chandler fears NBA deal might be detrimental to his future with Dallas Mavericks
Dallas Mavericks centre Tyson Chandler is not happy at all with the way, the NBA labour negotiations are progressing, and the player has one more reason to be displeased than most others involved - he could be forced out of Dallas.
Chandler, who won the NBA World Championship with the Mavericks last season, which was only his first one with the franchise, fears that a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) could force him to leave the Mavs.
Chandler has cited the harsh new luxury tax, alongside other stringent financial constraints, proposed by the league as harbingers to his departure from the team.
"With the collective bargaining agreement and some of the things that they're trying to enforce, it would basically prohibit me from coming back," Chandler told the "Ben and Skin Show" on 103.3 FM in Dallas. "It would take it out
of my hands -- and the organization's -- because it would almost be pretty much impossible for me to re-sign. I just think that can be the worst thing that can happen."
Chandler is a free agent this summer. His contract with the Mavericks was for just one year, but after his successful season both blub and player wanted to extend their partnership. However Chandler’s stellar performances mean
that his stock has risen considerably, and he is now a man in demand.
Therefore, his salary demands are also going to be much higher than what Dallas paid last season. Even within the old system, it would have been difficult for the Mavericks to come up with the money, and a new CBA that would crack
down on spending is only going to make matters worse.
Chandler also has another angle on the whole affair. While the NBA owners have claimed they need to introduce the new measures in order to even the level field for NBA franchises, Tyson believes such steps would be anything but
fair, especially to Dallas.
"For years, the Lakers have been able to win championships and re-sign their players and keep them there so they can go out for another title," Chandler said. "Now, to put that deal in place after we win ours, I don't like it one
bit."
The Lakers have time and again built up super star laden rosters. Right from Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain to Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, their money has allowed them to sustained periods of success.
With Mike Cuban bankrolling the Mavericks, Chandler and company believed they were ready to embark on a streak of their own. But now the new CBA, whenever it is formulated, is set to cut down their wings in midflight.
