Tyson Fury nails Vinny Maddalone to grab WBO Intercontinental heavyweight title – Boxing News
Tyson Fury, the Irish heavyweight champion, grabbed yet another accolade of his career by knocking out Vinny Maddalone, in the fifth round of the 12-round bout held on July 7, 2012, eventually grabbing the vacant WBO Intercontinental heavyweight gold.
In addition to the title and an impressive win over a veteran pugilist, Tyson also defended his undefeated streak successfully. The duo headlined the pay-per-view jointly organised and promoted by Mick Hennessy of Hennessy Sports and Jamie Sanigar.
The showdown was co-headlined by the 12-round bout between Lee Haskins and Stuart Hall for the vacant EBU (European) bantamweight gold. Fury put forth his hometown fans an impressive showdown and genuinely proved that he is undoubtedly the true number one
heavyweight in Britain.
From the very beginning, the huge Tyson emphatically battered Vinny with his powerful knockout jabs. The sheer power of Briton’s punches stunned Maddalone in the very initial rounds.
Vinny was expected to give a slight tough time to Tyson but the boxing universe got shocked when it witnessed Fury literally manhandle Vinny. With huge height and reach advantage, Fury completely dominated the bout.
It was the fourth round when Tyson threw some powerful upper cuts and jabs that connected well and not only blanked out Vinny but also gifted the American a cut under the left eye.
The damage was substantial and after that it was just a one-man show with Tyson continuously pummelling and battering Vinny. In the fifth round, after the passage of just one minute and 35 seconds, Tyson called in the referee to check Vinny.
Fury did do so because Vinny was unable to defend himself. Above all, Maddalone showed signs of being knocked out as he was throwing his fists wildly. Tyson’s decision aided Vinny and protected him from further annihilation since after the thorough examination,
the bout-referee called off the clash.
After the emphatic win and engraving his name on the vacant WBO intercontinental heavyweight gold, Fury stated, “I knew it was a matter of time. I actually called the referee over, he was taking some big shots.”
When asked as to what he thinks about his future opponent and how he feels about grabbing a win over a veteran heavily experienced brawler, Tyson commented, “I'm still undefeated. I would like to say I'm ready for anyone in the world. Klitschkos: bring them
on. Americans: bring them on. Bring on Tomasz Adamek. He's too small for me and I see an early win for me.”
It must be noted that Wladimir Klitschko who recently nailed Tony Thompson via sixth round knockout, is already eyeballing Tyson and has even denoted Fury, in a recent press conference, as his most probable future opponent.
