Tyson g*y ends Diamond League season with victory in Brussels
Asafa Powell of Jamaica held a two point lead over Tyson g*y of the United States after six Diamond League events, but wasn’t able to compete in Friday’s 100m final in Brussels after ending his season early due to a nagging back and hamstring injuries. The decision last week was not unexpected as the former 100m world record holder pulled out of events in Stockholm, London, Paris, and Zurich.
With Powell out of the running Tyson g*y of the United States sat tied with Richard Thompson of Trinidad & Tobago in the Diamond League standings. Yohan Blake of Jamaica was three points behind them.
g*y did not get off to a good start in the race and had to come from behind to win the race. He finished with a time of 9.79, and won the first ever 100m Diamond Trophy. g*y had won the last two Diamond League events in Stockholm and London so it was no surprise that he was able to win Friday in Brussels without Powell and Usain Bolt at the starting line.
The big surprise of the day was Nesta Carter of Jamaica taking second place in the race with a time of 9.85, a personal best. Nesta is currently ranked tenth in the world rankings and will look to improve upon that at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi. He finished the Diamond League season in fourth place.
Blake was able to take third in the race to prevent Nesta from passing him in the Diamond League standings. Thompson ended the season in second place despite a fifth place finish in the final.
The event in Brussels marks the end of the first annual Diamond League season.
