  2. You're right, it doesn't make a lot of sense.  You could go out and buy £500 worth of tickets at a time if you had the money.  You could easily be hooked on gambling.

But actually, having lived in both the UK and the US, I think the UK system is better.

At the age of 16 and 17 they gradually introduce you to lots of responsibilities, such as smoking, lottery, driving etc.  Once you turn 18, you get the rest of your adult rights.

Now in the US, you can drive, but all other rights are withheld until you are 18, and even then you are treated like a child until you are 21.  You can't drink, gambling is severely restricted, college campuses treat you like a child and so on.

So I think it's great that the UK encourages you to grow up a little at a time, and then makes you a real adult when you are 18.  I would have hated to have lived in the US between the age of 18 and 21.

  3. Because you will loose a lot of money hun.........

    XX.

  4. In a way, yes, but the Lottery doesn't create a gambling habbit.

The Lotto tickets themselves are 5 bars that will cost you at most a rate of £11 per week. You can lose yourself this much on a single race, or much much more. And because the odds in racing or on other sports change, you feel you can play the system.

The National Lottery Lotto game has standard odd of 13,900,000:1 for every line you buy, and the scratch cards also have a standard odds of winning. This puts any bet you make down to pot luck. And it is judged by law that when you reach the age of 16, you are capable of understanding this.

Other gambling though, relies partly on luck, but also on judgement. You must be able to understand that a bet you place, however seemingly likely, may lose. An eight horse race doesn't have odds of winning of 8:1, because the skill of the jockies, speed and stamina of the horse are calculated into the odds. This allows you to make a studied judgement of your choice, and because of that, and the substancially easier way in which to lose large sums of money, you can only gamble on anything but the national lottery when you are 18.

  5. A bit !! they take the absolute Michael in some cases like you can

    1.) have actual s*x at 16 not not watch p**n until 18.

2.) same with the armed forces, you can join and defend your country at 16 but not vote until 18 (though I do believe that now you wont be sent into combat until 18)

3.) and the absolute stupidest one of all is that you can leave school at 16, get a job and pay taxes towards the running of the country but are not allowed to vote on who runs it until you are 18.

  6. You can't lose all your money (relatively speaking) on lotto, because it's only a pound, whereas you can put any amount on at bookies....I do find this odd myself though
