U.S.A cruise into semifinals with 91-48 romp over Canada – Olympics Women Basketball Recap
The U.S women basketball team moved a step forward in their bid for an Olympic gold when they thrashed Canada for a 91-48 victory in the first quarter final of the tournament.
The U.S side dominated the game from the get go and outscored Canada in every quarter to compile a lead which reached 43 points by the time the game ended.
Diana Taurasi, continued to roll, and led five U.S players in double digit points with a game high 15 points and 4 assists, going 5 of 7 from the field and a perfect 4 of 4 from the foul line. Candace Parker finished with 12 points and 7 rebounds, going 6 of 8 from the field.
Kimberley Smith led the Canadian scoring with 13 points and 6 rebounds, while Chelsea Aubry was the only other Canadian in with double digit points, finishing with 10 points for the night.
The Americans dominated the game from the first period, jumping to a 19-4 lead through an 11-0 run in the mid of the period. Canada went 2 of 11 to open the game and looked rusty from the field, failing to make anything happen on the offensive end.
The U.S team however failed to score in the final 2 minutes of the period which allowed Canada to cut into the deficit, and they trailed 19-8 to close the first quarter.
A two point shot by Taurasi with a little over 4 minutes left in the second period gave the U.S team a 29-13 lead, but the best was still to come.
Team U.S.A added insult to injury when they went on a 9-0 run in the closing minutes of the 1st half to extend their lead to 42-17. Canada was able to score 4 more points before the quarter ended as the U.S team took a comfortable 42-21 lead into halftime.
The third period played out on the same tune, one which became increasingly agonizing for the Canadians, who got outscored 26-10.
A two pointer by Candace Parker increased the U.S lead to 55-28, as the Canadians were unable to make anything happen and caused no trouble for the charging Americans.
Nine consecutive points by team U.S.A pushed the lead to 64-28, and they ended the period leading by 68-31.
The game was over for all purposes by then, however the American onslaught sought no end.
Sylvia Fowles scored 6 straight points with 6:23 left in the game as the U.S team raced to a 79-40 lead. They then scored 10 more points to cap off a 16-0 run and lead 89-40.
The Canadians had not scored for 5 minutes and 50 seconds when Krista Phillips scored a two point shot to finally end the drought for the Canadian side. Team U.S.A cruised to a comfortable victory in the end.
Fowles finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds, while both Maya Moore and Angel McCoughtry added 11 points each to the team tally. The U.S team shot 47.3% from the field and were 19 of 23 from the foul line.
America had a 48-31 advantage in rebounds and a 15-3 advantage in steals as they proved a match too much for their North American neighbours.
