  1. This is from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier official website:

"The soldiers who stand guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are hand picked and rigorously trained. They have come from every state in the union, every walk of life. There are men and women."

Additionally in the FAQ on the site, one learns that there have been 3 female guards.  (The site was last updated in October 2007.)

  2. I know the standards for this are stricter than most. Example, the min height reqs, the max. height reqs, pace length, etc etc. The woman would have to be of male proportionals probably.

  3. I thought woman were not allowed into any infantry unit..This post is the Third United States Infantry Regiment "Old Guard"....

  4. There have been 3.

    Sgt. Johnson was the first.

    Sgt. Wilson the 2nd.

I give up on the 3rd name,

  5. Yes. Been allowed since 1994 http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/heather...

In fact, in 2004 a female commanded the unit.

Try doing a google search of "female Old Guard"

Note to LavaDog - they changed it to an MP Unit (Provisional) in the early 1990s. Mostly to allow women to serve as tomb guards.

  6. Yes, it's allowed but not common.  According to the Wikipedia entry, three women have been awarded the Badge for said service.  According to the Tomb Guards web site, the billets (staff positions) for the Guards are open to women.
