  1. Contiguous USA has 2 coasts (West:Pacific & East:Atlantic and Mexican Gulf) on either side. Each is a contiguous coast in itself. So, Mexican Gulf is continuation of Atlantic Ocean without a break.

  2. Yes to both.

Officially, since the Gulf of Mexico is part of the Atlantic Ocean, they are Atlantic coastal states.

However, in common usage in the United States, there are three groups:

    (1) Pacific coastal states:  Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington

    (2) Gulf coastal states: Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas

    (3) Atlantic coastal states:  Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia

Note:  Florida is both an Atlantic and a Gulf coastal state.  Sometimes Pennsylvania is considered a coastal state since the Delaware River experiences tides as far as Philadelphia.

Whether or not the states adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico are grouped with the Atlantic states or separated out depends on what is being classified.  Most of the time the three groups are used, but sometimes it will be just two.

Notice that nobody ever mentions that Alaska is an Arctic coastal state, but it is.

  3. Florida borders on the atlantic and the gulf so it it both an east coast and a gulf state.

The gulf of mexico is an extension of the atlantic but states bordering on it are called gulf states.  Some people refer to the states of Texas, Louisianna, Mississippi Alabama and the portion of Florida bordering on the gulf as being the "south coast"  There are many anamolies in geography..

for example in many instances "Russia is considered in or out of Europe depending on what is being discussed.

Europe is an extension of Asia but it is considered a continent...looking at any globe and it is obviously an extension of Asia.  Custom and useage are often inconsistent.

  4. I think the states that border the Gulf of Mexico are considered in the Southern region.

  5. No. East coast states refer to those that border the Atlantic-from Maine to Florida. The states that border the Gulf Of Mexico are generally called the Gulf Coast states.
