U.S Men’s Pan American Games Volleyball team loses to Toray Arrows by 3-1
The U.S men’s Pan American Games Volleyball team had a match with the Toray Arrows of Japan on Monday, September 3. The clash was an exhibition match that was being played in the gym of the Concordia University in Irvine, California.
Four long and gruelling sets saw the Japanese on the winning end of the score board. The first set of the match was won by the Americans as the Japanese took some time adjusting to the loud roars of the home crowd. However, Japan found its stride in the
second set and was able to equalise the match and the third set of the match was the most competitive as both sides went neck to neck and no one was sure where the tables would turn until the very end. However, it was the Japanese that bagged the third set
as well as the fourth set to seal the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 21-25, 25-20, 29-27, 25-19.
The American player that was able to make the most contribution for the team was Tony Ciarelli as he posted a total of 12 points for his squad. These points were obtained after making a total of 10 kills and two serving aces.
Despite the fact that they lost the match, the Americans were able to lead Toray in blocks by registering 10 of them while the Japanese were able to make seven in comparison. The attack of the Americans was also better than that of the Japanese as they were
able to post 50 kills in the entire match whereas the Toray put up a tally of 48. Even though the Americans performed better in these areas, they also committed lots of errors. The U.S team finished the match after committing a total of 18 hitting errors while
the Japanese only made seven.
Other than that, the serving of the Japanese was better than the Americans as Toray pulled off six aces while the Americans hit five as the Americans made more errors than the Toray. The U.S. committed 20 serving errors while the Arrows only made 15 of them.
The player that was able to make the most number of points among both teams was the Japanese Tatsunori Kakuda who scored 22 points in the entire match. These were obtained by tallying 21 kills as well as one block. On the American side, Matt Stork stood
to be the top scorer for his team. Stork was able to make his presence felt by registering eight points for his team.
