U.S Men’s Sitting Volleyball team losses to Russia but overcomes Egypt
The U.S Men’s Sitting Volleyball team had two matches on Wednesday, July 13, as part of the Continental Cup that is going on in Kettering, England. The first match took place against the Russians where as the second one was against Egypt.
The Americans lost to the Russians in a clean sweep whereas the match against Egypt was won by 3-1.
The Russians did not have a hard time handing out a loss to the Americans in three straight sets. The first set was won by the Russians with quite a margin but the Americans successively increased their efforts in the second and third sets. However, it was
not enough to stop the Russians from bagging the match at the following final set scores: 25-14, 25-17 and 25-18.
Having suffered an unfortunate loss, the American squad was all set to make a win out of their next match in the evening on the same day. The U.S team started off the first set of the match strong and bagged themselves a win. They went on to secure the second
set as well. After having lost the first two sets, the Egyptians were able to step up their game in the third set and make a win. However, the third was the only set that Egypt was able to get their hands on as the fourth set was won by the Americans. The
final set scores were as follows: 25-20, 25-22, 24-26 and 25-15.
The head coach of the U.S. team, Edgar Miraku made the following comments about the performance of his team: “Egypt is a formidable opponent for us to take on. The team did a phenomenal job of serving tough against Egypt and sticking to the game plan that
we had developed going into the match. Russia is a solid and experienced team that rarely makes unforced errors. For us, we were able to gain much needed high level competition while involving all of our players in the match.”
While playing against the Egyptians, the U.S. team was able to record a total of nine aces, whereas Egypt was able to tally only six. Not only was the U.S. squad able to outperform their rivals in aces, the Americans were also able to register a higher number
of blocks than the Egyptians by securing 10 with the Egyptians making eight.
The player that stood most prominent on the American squad was Eric Duda as he tallied a total of 14 points for his team. Duda was able to register 13 kills along with an ace as well. The other U.S. player that played an integral part in the match was James
Stuck who was able to add six points to the score board.
