U.S Men’s sitting volleyball team falls to England by 3-1 in 2011 Continental Cup
Saturday, July 16, saw the U.S Men’s Sitting Volleyball team compete against their English rivals in a match to decide the seventh and eighth position holders in the 2011 Continental Cup. Playing with the added advantage of being at the home ground in Kettering,
the English were able to secure themselves the seventh position after a match that went on for four sets with the final score line at 25-22, 25-16, 7-25 and 25-19.
The first set of the match was competitive with both teams giving it their best. However, the English were able to better the Americans and bag the opening set. Losing the first set had a negative effect on the performance of the U.S. squad and they did
not put up a significant fight in the second and lost by a considerable margin to England. However, the loss of the first two sets sent a wakeup call to the Americans and they were able to smother the English in the third set. Unfortunately for the Americans,
they were not able to keep up the good work and fell to the English in the fourth set to the Brits.
The head coach of the U.S. team made the following comments after the eighth place finish, “Like yesterday, we were playing today with new lineups trying to find the one that would work best for our situation. We just made too many mistakes early on and
Great Britain did a nice job of limiting their own.”
The U.S team started the first set of the match in competitive fashion by keeping the lead at 8-5 and then later on at 16-13. However, after the second technical time out the Americans started committing errors that eventually shifted the advantage towards
the English who were able to take advantage by grabbing the lead and heading off to an opening set win at 25-22.
The second set did not see any improvement in the performance of the U.S. squad that continued to make errors, giving a boost to the morale as well as the score of the English side. Eventually, the English found themselves to be at a comfortable lead of
21-9 that ended when they had bagged the second set at 25-16.
The Americans were able to put in all their energy in the third set of the game which they won in a blitzkrieg fashion at 25-7. However, that was the only moment of glory for the American squad as the English took the fourth set for themselves at 25-19.
The 2011 Continental Cup ends with the Americans taking home a total of three wins gathered at the expense of four losses. On the other hand, the English have been able to secure themselves the seventh position after bagging three victories and incurring
five defeats.
