U.S. Open 2010: Andy Murray seeded number four at Flushing Meadows
23-year-old Andy Murray from Scotland has been seeded at the fourth spot for the upcoming United States Open starting on Monday in New York.
Murray is in excellent form after getting the better of his Swiss opponent Roger Federer in the final of the Rogers Cup as well as making his way into the quarter-final round in Cincinnati just a few days ago.
World number 1 Rafael Nadal is seeded to win the title for the very first occasion in his career at Flushing Meadows.
Five times U.S. Open winner Roger Federer is seeded at the second spot to win the title this year in New York. Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic and Britain’s Andy Murray are seeded at number three and four at the U.S. Open 2010. The highest ranked American in the top ten seedings is Andy Roddick who is seeded at the ninth spot.
Last year’s U.S. Open winner Juan Martin del Potro, who defeated Federer in the final back in 2009 is not playing in this year’s competition as a result of wrist injury.
Apart from the right handed Murray, two other British tennis players are hoping to participate in the final Grand Slam event of the season.
Alex Bogdanovic will meet Blake Strode from the United States of America in the first round of the qualifying championship and British third ranked tennis ace Jamie Baker has been drawn versus Joao Souza.
In the women’s edition, second ranked tennis sensation Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark has been seeded number at the first place on the very first occasion in her career to win the title in New York.
Caroline was runners up in New York back in 2009 and is the first tennis player from the women’s side since 2003 to be seeded at the top spot at the United States Open without winning a Grand Slam trophy. Wozniacki is the number two tennis player in the world behind Serena Williams who announced her withdrawal from the competition just a few days ago as a result of her foot injury.
The 20-year-old Danish tennis star has won a total of three trophies including a win earlier this week at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
Reigning United States Open champion Kim Clijsters has been seeded as the second best in the tournament. Two time U.S. Open winner Venus Williams, Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic and Australia’s Samantha Stosur are seeded at three, four and five respectively.
The American tennis ace, Venus Williams while commenting on the upcoming fourth Grand Slam of the season said that she is all set for the competition in spite of the fact that the American had a tough summer this year with some leg injuries as well.
Two female British tennis players Elena Baltacha as well as Anne Keothavong are included in the main field where as four other Brits are also hoping to join them via qualifying matches.
Last year’s United States Open junior semi-finalist Laura Robson will meet former fourth ranked tennis ace Jelena Dokic in the first round of qualifying matches. Naomi Cavaday on the other hand will face Julia Cohen from the United States of America where as Heather Watson will play against Spain’s Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
Katie O'Brien has already knocked down Ukrainian Lesya Tsurenko to advance into the second round of qualifying.
