US Open 2010: Caroline Wozniacki through to the semi-finals
US Open’s top seed Caroline Wozniacki has powered through to the semi-finals in New York after overcoming Dominika Cibulkova under windy conditions on Wednesday.
The 2009 US Open finalist dominated the game right from the start to win in a total of two sets 6-2 and 7-5.
"It felt like battling in a hurricane," Caroline said after the match on Wednesday.
As a result of this victory, Wozniacki will now take on Russia’s Vera Zvonareva in the semi-final. Vera on the other hand advanced into the semis after defeating Estonian tennis ace Kaia Kanepi in a two setter clash with a final score of 6-3 and 7-5.
Caroline extended her winning streak to a total of thirteen clashes with this victory, which was quite tough in windy conditions at the Flushing Meadows.
The Danish tennis sensation committed a total of 18 unforced errors, while Dominika conceded 43. The five feet three inch Slovak tennis ace struggled especially in the initial stages as she missed her serves on a total of three occasions in the opening set due to the heavy winds.
She played much better in the following set however failed to force the tie-break that her game had merited, and Caroline earned a return to the final four in New York.
"When we were practising on the court prior to the match, I thought it’s not that windy however we actually came out to play it was a totally different situation and I felt quite difficult to control the ball on the court. As far as my semi final opponent, Vera is concerned, I am completely aware of the fact that she is playing quite well these days and it is not going to be easy at all. She made the finals of the grass court Grand Slam tournament this season and is now into the semi finals here in New York so she is definitely a great contender and I am going to go out there and play at my very best,” said Caroline after the match on Wednesday.
Zvonareva in her match looked much better than the Dane, as she dominated right from the start against Kanepi in the first quarter-final clash of the year’s final Grand Slam.
Seeded at the 31st spot, Kanepi committed a total of 6 double faults in the opening set of the match and was broken thrice. Her errors kept on coming in the following set, allowing the Russian tennis player to make her way into the semi-final’s in New York.
The clash featured a total of 88 unforced errors out of which 60 came from Kanepi as she struggled to cope up with the windy conditions on the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
Zvonareva after winning the quarterfinal battle said, “It was extremely tough out there for both of us without any question. We tried our level best to give our hundred percent and at times we had few ridiculous rallies as well however I was not ready to give up till the end no matter what the conditions and I am really glad the way in managed in the end. Under such tricky conditions, the most significant thing is to find the right balance between being attacking and being defensive, between going for shots and keeping the ball in play. In my opinion, I successfully managed to find that balance.”
