U.S Open 2010: Highlights from Tuesday
Australian tennis ace Samantha Stosur was defeated on Tuesday at the United States Open by Belgian tennis ace Kim Clijsters in a total of three sets. The final score was 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
As a result of this win, the reigning US Open Champion will now face Venus Williams in the semi-final round of this year’s final Grand Slam tournament.
Australia’s only hope in the tournament did not manage to capitalise on a couple of service breaks in the final set of the match as Kim proved to be too strong for her in the end.
Kim committed a total of 43 unforced errors and 8 double faults against Clijsters in New York. There were 15 breaks during the serve, including 2 for Samantha during the decisive set in the exciting battle which concluded after a two hour battle on Tuesday.
In spite of the fact that Samantha had a tiring clash against Elena Dementieva a day earlier, it was the Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters who looked exhausted as she fired a dozen unforced errors in the first 6 games to swiftly fall to 4-2 in the first set at Flushing Meadows.
"This entire ten days has been extremely hard to get familiar with the conditions. Every single clash is just another tough battle and mentally you have to try really hard to cope with it,” said Clijsters after the match.
However, the 2009 US Open winner did well afterwards to win 12 of the next 15 points, breaking Samantha’s serve in the eighth game with 5-4 on the board.
The first ever Australian woman quarterfinalist at the Flushing Meadows since Wendy Turnbull back in 1986, Samantha was under extreme pressure during the 10th game and she couldn’t manage well in the end against the Belgian.
Samantha started off the second set quite well, breaking Kim’s first service game and holding for 2-0. However, as the match progressed, the Australian committed a total of two double faults to provide Kim a break-back point and the former world number one found the line with the help of a backhand return to level the match at 2-2.
She committed a total of four unforced errors during the ninth game to give Samantha the opportunity to serve the next set at 5-4.
The Belgian turned out to be stronger of the two in the final set of the match on Tuesday. Stosur missed a couple of opportunities and thus couldn’t make up for it and lost the match in the end.
"I am glad that I managed to play aggressively in that final set. In spite of the fact that I didn’t serve that well in my today’s match but I am glad that I ended up winning it,” said Clijsters after the match.
In other action on Tuesday, third seeded Venus Williams made it to the semi-final round of the United States Open after defeating Francesca Schiavone in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7-6 (5), 6-4.
In the men’s section, Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny also defeated Spanish opponent Tommy Robredo in a four setter clash on Tuesday. The final match score was 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Top seeded Rafael Nadal defeated Feliciano Lopez in the fourth round of the United States Open in New York. The final match score was 6-3 6-4 and 6-4.
