U.S Open 2010: Mikhail Youzhny’s pre-semi final performance roundup
The Russian tennis player, Mikhail Youzhny advanced into the semi final round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after outlasting Stanislas Wawrinka in a total of five sets on Thursday. The final match score was 3-6 7-6 (9-7) 3-6 6-3 6-3.
Mikhail, as a result of this victory has made his way into the year’s final major semis on the second occasion in his career. The twelfth seeded Russian took a time period of four hours to get the better of Stanislas in blustery conditions on the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
Mikhail also reached the semi final round at the Flushing Meadows back in 2006, where he was defeated by the American tennis foe, Andy Roddick in a total of four sets in the end.
"It was quite tough out there and we both are good players and so I am glad that I won it in the end. I was just trying my level best to go for every shot, rather thinking about the outcome of the match,”said Youzhny after the victory.
Having defeated Tommy Robredo as well as John Isner in his last two clashes, Mikhail faced another hard foe in Wawrinka, with whom the Russian shared a 2-2 face to face record.
The twenty eight year old Youzhny started off the match in a perfect manner when he broke Stanislas in his opening service game however the Swiss quickly smashed back and was not ready to give up till the end.
The Russian however, after losing the opening set, once again managed to break his opponent’s serve during the start of the second set in the quarterfinal match of the U.S Open 2010 on Thursday. Youzhny, then did well to level the game with the help of second set tie breaker.
However, Youzhnycouldn’t dominate for long and just after some time, the Swiss tennis star, Wawrinka once again succeeded in getting early break in the third set and was up with 3-0.
Despite playing inconsistently, the right handed Russian refused to give up and at last took a lead of 3-0 in the fourth set after breaking his foe’s opening service game.
The movement of the Swiss tennis player became highly laboured around the net as the Russian leveled the quarter final battle on the three hour mark to set up a fascinating last-set decider.
Youzhny managed to secure a break point in the opening game of the decisive set as Stanislas wilted under pressure however the Swiss star leveled the clash immediately in the next game.
A long medical break then followed as the Russian received some toe treatment however the delay seemed to have its required effect as Youzhny broke on the second occasion for a lead of 3-2.
"I don’t think that I give up in today’s match till the end. I tried my level best for sure however I committed some major mistakes and after such a tiring four hours match, I couldn’t mange to return. However, as far as the overall tournament is concerned, I am highly pleased with the way I have played this year at the Flushing Meadows. It was a really nice experience. My best performance in my opinion was in my match against Andy Murray as I played really well and remained strong till the end,” said Stanislas after the match in New York.
In some other action on Thursday, the top seeded duo, Bob Bryan and Liezel Huber captured their second major trophy in mixed doubles following a 6-4 6-4 victory over Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Kveta Peschke.
