U.S. Open 2010: Petra Kvitova and Samantha Stosur win their third day clashes
Great Britain’s Elena Baltacha was defeated in her second round match of the United States Open by Petra Kvitova from Czech Republic in a total of two sets on Wednesday. The final match score was 7-6 (7-5) and 6-3.
Elena had thoroughly enjoyed her first ever main draw victory at the U.S. Open 2010 when she defeated Petra Martic in the first round. However, Kvitova proved to be the stronger of the two players.
As a result of this victory, Kvitova will meet last year’s U.S. Open winner Kim Clijsters or Sally Peer in her next round match of the United States Open in New York.
Elena saved a total of two break points during the eleventh game of the first set. However, Kvitova managed a tight tie-break and a single break of serve during the second set which turned out to be enough in the end.
The Scott after the match admitted that Petra has more power and strength and she rightly used it during the second set of the clash that actually made the difference in the end. After her defeat, Elena claimed, "I basically felt quite comfortable during the start of the match and though that I am going to win it easily however I gave her a couple of second serves that went wrong for me in the end. Towards the end of the game, I had no choice but was only looking for some mistakes by her but she really did play well and thus won the match.”
The 27-year-old Baltacha however is still quite convinced that as a result of her recent performances, she will soon push her world rankings into the top fifty.
She said, "It’s going to be a very special moment for me. However, it would have been wonderful to win and reach the top fifty rankings that way. But I am still not sure whether I will make it or not as it largely depends on the players around me who have to defend their points at the Flushing Meadows so it will be clearer after the championship. However, I strongly believe that I have the talent to be among the top fifty players. Although, there is no doubt about the fact that I need to improve a lot but I have already started working on it and my first round victory here in New York has given me a lot of confidence.”
In other action on Wednesday, Australia’s Samantha Stosur has made her way into the third round of the United States Open with a crushing two set win over Anastasia Rodionova in New York. The final match score was 6-1, 6-4.
Stosur dominated the match right from the start and dismissed Rodionova within an hour. As a result of this victory, the Australian will now meet Sara Errani from Italy.
Errani made her way into the third round of the United States Open after upsetting her Russian opponent Alisa Kleybanova in just two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-3.
It is the very first occasion that the Australian tennis ace Samantha Stosur has progressed past round two in New York.
"I had some disappointing performances in the past here in New York, therefore to reach the third round of the tournament for the very first time is obviously a great feeling. I will definitely try to avail this opportunity and at least reach the later stages of the US Open,” said the fifth seeded Stosur on Wednesday.
