The Spaniard tennis star Rafael Nadal has reached the quarter final round of the United States Open tennis tournament 2010 after defeating Feliciano Lopez in a total of three sets on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-3 6-4 6-4.
Nadal after the match said that he is playing his best tennis at the moment in New York. The world number one Spaniard, as a result of this victory will meet Fernando Verdasco in the quarter final round of the year’s final Grand Slam tournament.
There was bigger drama elsewhere, as both Stanislas Wawrinka as well as Verdasco triumphed in their epic five-setter clashes.
Stanislas’s win took him through to a quarter battle with Mikhail Youzhny.
The Swiss tennis player followed up his loss of Andy Murray with a marathon 7-6 (11-9) 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 4-6 6-4 victory over his American tennis foe, Sam Querrey in a time period of four and a half hours.
Stanislas joins five-time winner Roger Federer in the final eight - the very first occasion Switzerland has ever had two tennis players from the men’s side in the quarter final round of a major championship.
The twenty fifth-seeded tennis player grabbed the opening set on a tie-break, however, was broken while serving for the next set, as Sam hit back to tie the clash.
Stanislas then bounced back from 3-1 down to capture the third set, however, Sam broke once to level again, before the Swiss tennis ace broke in the tenth game of the final set to make his way into the quarter final round of a Grand Slam tournament on the very first occasion in his career.
"It is my very first quarter final in a major event so I am extremely glad and highly excited,” he said. "It is something which is very significant and valuable for me and I was aware of the fact prior to the match that it is going to be a tight clash. However I didn’t lose my focus till the end and at last won the battle.”
The twelfth-seeded Youzhny from Russia also managed to beat his Spaniard tennis foe, Tommy Robredo in a total of four sets in New York. The final match score was 7-5 6-2 4-6 6-4.
"It is the very first occasion in a season that I have already had a total of two quarter-finals in major events," said the French Open quarter-finalist. "It perhaps means that I have now started to play more consistently and I am hoping to continue my form in the future as well.”
