U.S. Pro Beach Volleyball Tour starts with one-day tournament
The USA Volleyball (USAV) has announced that the 2011 Pro Beach Volleyball Tour will be officially kicking off on Saturday, May 21.
The exciting season-opening event will be hosted by Tybee Island in Georgia. This is second year in a row that Pro Beach Volleyball will make a stop at the Tybee Island. This year, the double gender one-day tournament will be attended by 24 Pro Beach Volleyball
duos, while 12 teams will show up in men’s and women’s category. The tournament will follow the two-person team format and the prize money of $5,000 will be offered to the victorious team. Additionally, each 1st-place team will be awarded $1,000.
The tournament will start at 08:00 with the preliminary round matches. The decisive final round will begin at 15:00 with women’s final game, while it will be followed by men’s final at 17:00.
In the men’s section, the duo of Chris Keen/Brian Tillman will enter the competition with the tag of defending champions. Last year, they worked out an amazing victory over Pedro Penate and Osvaldo Perez. On the other hand, the pairing of Brittany O’Neil
and Tracy Blair pulled off success in the women’s division. They edged out Robin Mignerey and Jill Cox in the final show of the tournament.
The defending champions are determined to maintain their dominance for another year but other teams also have plans to enjoy the spotlight.
The Director of Extreme Volleyball Professional (EVP), Carlos Jimenez is optimistic that the competition will be a huge success. Speaking about the last year’s event in Tybee Island, he stated, “Last year was our first time there and everybody enjoyed it.
All of the pros that came down to the event thought it was great, and also because it coincided with the Beach Bum Weekend. They really enjoyed that little festival, plus the area is great.”
Jimenez is of the opinion that Tybee Island will soon become the annual stop for the Pro Beach Volleyball Competition. Tybee Island is getting a good fame among the fifteen cities of EVP Tour.
The Director of Greater Savannah Sports Council, Ben Wilder had the same remarks about the one-day tournament in Tybee Island. He said that it was successful experiment to organise the Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament at Tybee Island last year.
Commenting about 2011 edition of the tournament, he said, “Year Two sounds like it will be just as good if not better. We’re looking forward to it.”
