U.S. Women's Amateur now enters the Round of 32
The round of 64, the first round of match play in the U.S. Women's Amateur is over and the field is now reduced to 32 players. Many of the matches ended in predictable results while some were real upsets.
One predictable match was between the South Korean player Hyo-Joo Kim and the US player Megan Khang. The match ended with a 7 and 6 victory for Kim.
This was the first match of the day and the experts had already announced the results. Kim was the number one seeded player while Khang was 64 seeded. There was no chance of an upset.
The second predictable match was between the world’s number one amateur Lydia Ko and the American player Amy Beth Simanton. Although Simanton played great in the qualifying stage, she was no match for Ko, who won an easy 4 and 3 victory.
Ariya Jutanugarn from Thailand also won her match. This was another match that was expected to offer a predictable result. She was up against Jennifer Yang from Korea.
Yang who was 62nd on the leaderboard offered no resistance to Jutanugarn. The final result was a 3 and 1 victory for Ariya Jutanugarn.
The surprise of the day was the match between the two Lees from California. Alison Lee and Andrea Lee met in a match that many experts had chalked up as a predictable game.
It was expected that Alison would win the match with an easy lead. However, it was Andrea who emerged as the victor with a 1 up score.
Andrea Lee said that the match became interesting at the final holes. According to her, “I hit a nice drive on 18 that left me with a perfect yardage.”
She was not happy with the results of the match. Alison Lee is a friend and the two players have often played together. She said, “It's kind of hard playing a friend, knowing only one of you is going to win”.
The round of 32 is scheduled next. After the first round, many experts have withheld their predictions. The round of 32 is a well known place for upsets and anything could happen there.
