U.S. Women's Open offers twice the points to players seeking berth in the Solheim Cup
The U.S. Women’s Open is an opportunity for players to earn points for the 2013 Solheim Cup.
Points decide the fate of many players in the Solheim Cup, the most prestigious golf event between the US and European teams.
The points are awarded to US born players who finish in top 20. For the 2013 Solheim Cup, the race to accumulate the points started at the 2011 CN Canadian Women's Open. The points will determine the line-up of the eight-member US team.
The U.S. Women’s Open is particularly important for the US players who aim to play on the US team in the next year’s Solheim Cup.
The US team is selected on the basis of points that the players accumulate while playing in the Ladies Professional Golf Association’s tournaments. Their final standing in these events merits them for points that affect their chances to play on the US team.
The U.S. Women’s Open is special because players will get double points for their performance. The rule is that players will win double points in non- Solheim Cup years.
This rule is applicable only on the four major LPGA tournaments. Meanwhile, in the Solheim Cup year, the ratio drops down to one-and-a-half.
All players recognize the importance of these points. Brittany Lang, who has played in the US team twice, is looking forward to the points. These points will elevate her standing and improve her chances for a third entry in the US team.
Talking about the Solheim Cup, she said, “Having that playoff and pressure and finally making a putt to win is going to help what matters to me most, which is the Solheim Cup”.
However, this year the U.S. Women's Open is not an easy nut to crack. Blackwolf Run Golf Club is notoriously difficult to play on.
The rough terrain and unpredictable weather means that players will have to play their best game to earn the coveted points.
The U.S. Women's Open is underway at the Wisconsin venue. The players are focused on playing good golf and earn their share of the 3.25 million prize money.
