U.S. Women Sitting Volleyball team defeats Slovenia by 3-2
The U.S. Women Sitting Volleyball team had a match on September 6th with the Slovenian squad. The competition was part of the ECVD Continental Cup that is currently taking place in Yevpatoriya, Ukraine.
The game between the Americans and the Slovenians took five long and gruelling sets to reach its close at the end of which the U.S. squad was celebrating their hard earned win over their opponents. The score board showed the following final set scores that
translated into an American victory: 25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 25-27 and 16-14.
The first set of the match saw the Americans dominate all the way to the end. The Slovenians let the lead slip to the Americans who did not let go of the advantage until they had bagged the opening set of the game. The Slovenians stepped up their play in
the second set and started the frame on even footing. However, as the set progressed the Americans were able to move up ahead and secure another win and leave the Slovenians behind.
Losing the first two sets of the game did not sit well with the Slovenians and they played an impressive round that made the third set thrilling. With the game still tied in the final stages, the Slovenians were finally able to secure their first set of
the match. Building on the confidence generated by winning the third set, the Slovenians started off the fourth set with determination but the Americans were equally focused to get a final win. The battle lasted for a long time as both the teams were still
tied near the end. However, it was the Slovenian squad that was able to better their opponents and take the match to a decisive final set.
The fifth set of the game saw both the teams locking horns together in an effort to gain dominance on the courts. After an exciting final set, it was the American side that was able to give the final cheer.
The assistant coach of the American squad expressed herself in the following words at the press conference that was conducted after the match: “We didn't play our best against Slovenia but were able to squeak out a win. After we dropped sets three and four,
Slovenia forced us to play; so we had to regroup with a come-from-behind win in the fifth set. Slovenia was up 14-11 in the fifth set and we were able to work back to take the match.”
The highest number of points scored in the match was by the American player, Katie Holloway, as she was able to post a total of 21 points. These were achieved with the help of making 15 kills as well as six blocks in the entire match.
