U.S. Women’s National Volleyball team named Atheletes of the Week by USA Today
The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball team has been recently named the Athletes of the Week by USA Today. The title has been bestowed on the team after it was able to secure the gold medal in the recently concluded NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship.
This is not the first time that the Americans were able to get their hands on the NORCECA champion’s title. The US squad has been able to grab a total of five tournaments previously.
The tiel win that the U.S team has been able to manage has gotten them a free pass into the FIVB World Cup that is scheduled to take place on the 8th of October and last until the 14th. A total of 12 teams will be taking part in the
international competition with the top three position holders of the World Cup getting a slot in the London 2012 Olympics because the championship will act as the qualifying event for the Summer Games.
U.S. team-member, Lindsay Berg, made the following comments regarding the teams spirit that is prevalent in the squad: “We play together as a team for one another. Even the players on the bench participate in the match in so many ways. They look for tendencies
of the other team and give us tremendous feedback. It is incredible to be a part of this team.”
The NORCECA tournament saw the U.S. squad put on a commendable show for its fans as the team did not lose even a single match. The Americans were able to seal the deal on the tournament by winning each match by making a clean sweep over their opponents.
The two teams that the Americans contested with in the pool play were Canada and Trinidad and Tobago. Later on in the quarter-finals, the Americans bettered the Mexicans while they defeated the Cubans in the semis. The final match was played against Dominican
Republic after which the Americans got their hands on the gold.
In the entire tournament, the U.S team only made 76 errors and were able to post a hitting efficiency of .364. All this added up to a very successful campaign for the Americans.
