U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball team beats Ukraine 3-1: ECVD Continental Cup
The U.S Women’s Sitting volleyball team had a match on September 5th with the home team of Ukraine. The match was a part of the ECVD Continental Cup that is currently being played in Yevpatoriya, Ukraine.
The contest between the two sides went on until four sets at the end of which the Americans were able to assert themselves as victors at the following final set scores: 25-18, 25-21, 21-15 and 25-23.
The first set of the match started off with both the teams going in for the kill but as the frame progressed, the Americans were able to come out strong and speed on towards an opening set win. Losing the first set of the game on their home ground did not
sit well with the Ukrainians and they stepped up their game in the second set but could not turn the tables in their favour as the Americans headed off towards another win. The loss of the first two sets triggered a forceful response from the home team as
they took a lead early on in the third set and were able to extend their advantage, leaving the Americans in the lurch. A third set win got the Ukrainians into motion and they fought valiantly in the fourth set of the game but the Americans were able squash
all Ukrainian hopes by winning the fourth set.
The assistant coach of the American team, Cara Lang, expressed her happiness in the following manner after her team had won the match: “We really found our niche against Ukraine. It was good to get this day over with on a good note.”
The American team was able to outperform their rivals in all the significant areas that cost the Ukrainians the match. The U.S. was able to post more kills than Ukraine by registering 52 of them while in comparison, Ukraine could only answer back with 27
kills. The Americans also blocked better than Ukraine as the U.S made 10 with the Ukrainians trailing behind with nine blocks. The serving of the Americans remained strong too as the U.S recorded a total of seven serves while the Ukrainians could make six
in return.
The highest number of points scored by the American side was by Heather Erickson, with 11 points in the entire match. Erickson was helped by Monique Burkland who made her presence felt by adding a total of 10 points to her side of the score board.
The Americans played with the home team after they had successfully defeated the Russians by 3-2 on the same day. With two wins under their belt, the American team is soaring high in the tournament.
