U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball team heads into final of ECVD Continental Cup
The semi-final of the ECVD Continental Cup took place between the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball team and Slovenia on September 9th. The match between the two sides was held in Yevatoriya, Ukraine. The American squad was able to stretch its winning streak
to a total of seven matches by defeating Slovenia in a clean sweep and securing their ticket into the finals that will be played on Saturday.
The Americans were able to dominate play overall as they won each set by a comfortable margin. It was only in the first set of the game that Ukraine was able to challenge the Americans, while the rest of the two sets did not see Ukraine perform with any
confidence in their skill. The score that got the Americans the win stood at the following figures: 25-20, 25-15 and 25-11.
When the match had reached its close, the U.S. assistant coach, Cara Lang, had these comments to make: “It was a success for us to win against Slovenia in three sets when it took us five sets for a win previously. We committed errors in the first set that
gave Slovenia 12 of their 20 points, but the girls were able to hone in the game plan to make the next two sets much easier.”
The top scorer on the American side was their captain, Katie Holloway, as she was able to post a total of 18 points in the match overall. These were accomplished by making 12 kills as well as four service aces that were accompanied by two blocks. Holloway
was helped by Brenda Maymon who was able to add 14 points to the score board. Maymon made her mark by pulling off nine kills along with three service aces that were topped with two blocks too.
Apart from these two players, Michelle Gerlosky also proved to be productive in her contributions as recognized by Lang in the following words: “Michelle Gerlosky went on a serving streak each opportunity, which gave us the point cushion we needed.”
The first set of the match saw the Americans leading but before long they fell to making errors that gave Slovenia a push in the game. Even with the U.S. team struggling, Slovenia could not make much headway and the Americans recovered to make a comeback
and win the opening set at 25-20. Once the Americans had gotten into their stride, they kept the pressure on the Slovenians in the second as well as the third sets and sailed smoothly towards a win at 25-15 and 25-11 respectively.
America will face the home team of Ukraine in the final match and will be looking forward to go undefeated in the tournament by sealing the deal on the title match as well.
