U.S. Women’s Sitting volleyball team earns gold at Parapan American Zonal Championship
The U.S Women’s Sitting volleyball team had a match on October 1st with Brazil in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The match was the gold medal decider of the Parapan American Zonal Championship. Despite the fact that America was playing in the home ground
of their rivals, they were able to get their hands on the championship title after making a clean sweep of Brazil.
It did not take long for the Americans to make the match reach its close as they dominated each set and the Brazilians could not make much head way. By the time the game had finished, the Americans had won the day at the following final set scores: 25-13,
25-12 and 25-15.
The captain of the winning team, Katie Holloway, made the following comments at the press conference after her team had won the match: “The team had a great tournament. We didn’t lose a set the entire tournament showing our consistency of play. Everyone
played well.”
Holloway secured the highest number of points on the American side and was able to register a total of 17 points. These points were obtained after pulling off 12 kills, three aces as well as two blocks. Holloway was helped by her team-mate, Monique Burkland,
who was able to make her presence felt by putting up 10 points for her team.
The first set of the match started off with both teams almost level with each other but before long, the Americans were able to take dominance on the courts with a lead. Once they had the advantage, the Brazilians could not do much except trail behind and
wait unitl the Americans had bagged the first frame of the match at 25-13.
The loss of the opening frame did not do much to lift the spirits of the Brazilians while the Americans came out strong from the start. The U.S. was able to take the lead early on and stretch their advantage. It was only a matter of time before the Americans
were able to seal the deal on the second set at 25-12.
The third set saw the Brazilians show some signs of life but they could not stop the Americans from winning the set at 25-15.
The Americans have now secured their ticket into the London 2012 Para-Olympics. However, the Brazilian team also made it to the Olympic Games to be held next year. Brazil had earned its entry after it defeated the Canadians in the semi-final of the tournament.
