U.S Women’s Sitting volleyball team to play Final of Para Panamerican Zonal Championship
The U.S Women’s Sitting volleyball team is to compete in the final of the Para Panamerican Zonal Championship today, October 1. The tournament is currently being staged in Sao Paulo, Brazil and is showcasing some of the best teams in the reagion.
The U.S. Women’s sitting volleyball team is on a winning spree with another clean sweep added to their record on Friday. The three straight set win is the third consecutive sweep that the Americans have been able to pull off in the Para Panamerican Zonal
Championship. In all, the Americans are going on a four match winning streak.
The recent win has earned the Americans a ticket into the finals of the tournament. The U.S side previously played the fledgling team from Colombia before and had handed out a smothering defeat. The semi-final match however could not have been more one sided
as the Colombians could only score one point in the entire three sets. By the time that the Americans were done, the final set scores stood at the following points: 25-0, 25-0 and 25-1.
Such a stark difference in the points of the two teams can be attributed to the fact that Colombia is a new squad that is still in its developing stages while the Americans are pretty mature in their game. Therefore, the match that followed was child’s play
for the American squad and it was only a formality to make the score board tally 25 three times before the Americans could be declared as the winners of the semi-final round.
The win has made the American coach, Bill Hamiter, proud and he is looking forward to the championship match.
The players that were able to score the most points for the Americans were Kaleo Kanahele, Kari Miller and Monique Burkl, each of whom posted 13 points for their team in the entire match.
The final of the championship will either take place with Brazil or Canada. The tournament is acting as the qualifying event for the London 2012 Paralympics. The Americans are already in possession of a slot in the Paralympics, what remains to be decided
is whether the Brazilians or the Canadians will be the ones to earn a ticket into the event.
