U.S and China meet in 2011 Continental Cup for runner-up spots: Sitting Volleyball
The U.S Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team is up against their Chinese opponents shortly today, July 15, in a match that is part of the 2011 Continental Cup. The tournament is currently being held in Kettering, England.
The American squad has made it to today’s match after having won three while losing two games. Both the Chinese and the Americans have clashed against each other in the pool play before. During their last meeting, U.S. was able to hand out a defeat to the
Chinese squad by 3-1. The first set of the match was lost by the Americans but they came out strong in the next three sets and accomplished a win at the following final set scores: 15-25, 25-19, 25-22 and 25-20.
The American squad is out of the running for the top positions because they were ousted by Brazil in the quarter-finals. The Brazilians were able to smoother their rivals in a relentless clean sweep of the American squad. The second set was the only one
in which the Americans were able to put up a significant amount of competition, other than that, the first and the third ones were lost by quite a margin. By the time the Brazilians were done, the score board showed the following final set scores: 25-16, 25-21
and 25-12.
Edgar Miraku, the U.S. Head Coach, made the following comments about his team: “Any time we have an opportunity to play Brazil, it is a very important match for us considering that they are in our zone. Although the team did not play at its best throughout
the match, there were still several good runs that we did make and will help us in our preparations for Parapan Ams.”
The Continental Cup matches that are currently going on will determine which teams will fall on positions from five to eight. The other two teams that are competing to attain a position within this bracket are teams from Ukraine and Great Britain. The team
that emerges as winners from today’s match between China and U.S. will be competing against the winner of the match between Ukraine and Great Britain for the fifth spot in the tournament.
