U.S. beats Korea to top Pool C of FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championships
The U.S. squad competed against the Korean team on Sunday, July 24th, in pool play of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championships that are currently being held in Trujillo, Peru. The match took place at the Gran Chimu Gymnasium and
saw the Americans earn the first slot in Pool C by making a clean sweep over their rivals.
The first set of the match was competitive but the Americans ended it on their terms. After losing the opening set of the game, the Koreans seemed to slacken as they let the Americans take them out in the second set by a significant margin. However, the
loss of the first two sets of the game revived the Koreans into making an effort but it came too late and the Americans were able to finish off the match at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-14 and 25-23.
The U.S. head coach, Robert Browning, made the following comments at the press conference after the game: “We are very happy with this victory. We prepared very well knowing that Korea was such a strong team. The pool in which we were placed in was quite
a difficult one we are lucky to win the first place. I really wish to be placed in the same pool with Peru, that’d be such an interesting match”
On the other hand, the Korean head coach, Gi-Ju Park, expressed himself in the following words: “Congratulations to the USA for winning this match, now we have to focus on our strategy in order to win the next one.”
The first set opened with the Korean team taking the initial two points but the Americans were able to neutralise the score by tying the set at 4-4. After that point, the U.S. squad moved ahead and got the lead for themselves at 17-13 but Korea was not about
to give up and levelled the score at 19-19. The Americans did not lose their nerve and took the lead again at 23-20 only to see it eliminated by the Koreans at 23-23. However, it was the American side that took home the first set of the match at 25-23.
The Americans were able to get themselves the advantage early on at 12-7 in the second set but Korea closed in the gap at 14-12. However, the American team did not let the match slip out of their hands and capped off a win at 25-14.
The start of the third set of the game saw the Koreans take the lead at 6-3 but the Americans tied it at 7-7. Korea kept playing tough and still had the lead at 21-18 but the Americans were able to turn things around in their favour and bag the third set
of the game at 25-23.
By winning the match, the U.S. team has been able to enter the second round of the tournament that will commence from the 26th July.
