I'm a 18 year old American citizen born in NYC. I don't have papers for Canada. My dad lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, and my mom lives in Toronto. I'm planning to cross the border to North carolina this summer, but i don't have canadian citizenship documents. I came to canada with my mom when i was a baby so i don't have photo id such as a drivers license. I need to go to the states and when i get there apply for my drivers licence. I talked to the border people over the phone and they said anyone 18 and under only need a proof of citizenship such as a Birth Certificate. I have a school id /but no government photo id and i plan on get my driver's licence when i get to the states. I have my Birth Certificate will that help me get into the border?I have a school picture id you think it will help?

  1. Why are you asking us when you already have an answer from the "border people". It's right there in your question.

  2. The answer is not clear-cut for you because you are 18.  At 18, you are no longer considered a minor.  You are considered an adult.  Will your mother be travelling with you?  If so, you could be considered to be "under adult supervision" and so you might be able to cross as a minor with just your birth certificate.  If you are travelling alone, I think you will need more than your birth certificate - you will need the government issued photo ID as well.  My understanding of the regulations is:

"U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 16 through 18 traveling with school, religious, cultural or athletic groups and under adult supervision will also be allowed to travel with only their birth certificates."

  3. You just said the boarder patrol said at 18 you only need your birth certificate.  So yes, it will help - as in without it you wont get across the border.  And you don't need any other picture ID, but bring it anyway.  That is, you can make it in on a land crossing.  You need a passport to fly.
