  1. no, you do not become one automatically,

    Naturalization:

    Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon a foreign citizen or national after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The general requirements for administrative naturalization include:

    a period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States;

    residence in a particular USCIS District prior to filing;

    an ability to read, write, and speak English;

    a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government;

    good moral character;

    attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution; and,

    favorable disposition toward the United States.

    All naturalization applicants must demonstrate good moral character, attachment, and favorable disposition. The other naturalization requirements may be modified or waived for certain applicants, such as spouses of U.S. citizens. Applicants should review the materials listed under "Related Links" and carefully read the N-400 application instructions before applying.

  2. Yes you do by law but to make it official u have to file for the documents.I am married to a us citizen.But word of advice u have to wait five years to file for it i think.Hope thats helps.

  3. NO. Marriage does not automatically grant you citizenship. You have to be petitioned (K-3 if married outside the US, K-1 if you plan to marry in the US) You then wait for that visa to be granted before moving forward. Wait 3 years to be eligible for naturalization. This is to discourage people to marry just to become US citizens.**

  4. Spotter is right, as far as he goes.

    Marrying a US citizen does not grant citizenship or any other benefit automatically.  The citizen spouse must file a petition requesting an immigrant visa for the non-citizen.  If the petition is approved, the visa can be granted at a US embassy or consulate.  Then the non-citizen can go to the US and request a green card.  After a period of residency, he or she can apply for citizenship.

    Note, there is nothing that the non-citizen spouse can do to acquire US citizenship without the citizen's actions.
