I am an undergraduate microbiology major and would like to get a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology. I am looking to spend the summer of 2009 in England (London, perhaps) studying in a global/international health program. Any advice on where to find a good program, where to stay? I've never been abroad before and could use all the insight I can get.

  1. My advise would be to check out how much this little trip is going to cost you. London is an extremely expensive place to live. Have your accommodation sorted and research the other costs of living.

I would also consider other places in Britain. Edinburgh, in Scotland, has a great University and their medical type programmes are up with the best. It would be a heck of a lot cheaper to live there too! The weather is not so warm in the winter, but the scenery is stunning. The people are really friendly their as well. By the way I am from New Zealand and had never been to the UK either. Get over there and have a look. You won't regret it.

  2. First of all, England is a fantastic place for first-time overseas travel. I studied there last summer; London is a very navigable city, the culture is fantastic, the people are wonderful, etc. (Clearly, I had a great experience.)

You might try with the University of London; it has many colleges covering many disciplines. You can also study abroad through US universities; that's what I did. The professors were American, and the credits came through the US university, but it was all in Britain.

Whatever you decide to do, best of luck! Studying abroad is one of those things that everyone should do; good for you for stepping up and wanting to do it!

  3. Here's a great site that gives you information on studying abroad in England:

    And London:

    Good luck!
