U.S. defeats Dominican Republic by 3-0 in a FIVB World Grand Prix match - Volleyball
In a FIVB World Grand Prix fixture that took place in Komaki, Japan on August 11th, the United States Women’s National team was able to hand out a defeat to the Dominican Republic by making a clean sweep over them. Both teams were part of the
Pool H in the tournament.
The first set of the match was tight but the Americans prevailed in the end to move ahead of their rivals. The second set progressed along similar lines as the opening set with the Dominican Republic giving way to the Americans in the end. However, Dominican
Republic lost all its steam in the third set that resulted in an easy win for the Americans at the following final set scores: 25-22, 25-22 and 25-10.
The first set of the match saw the U.S side struggle initially as Dominican Republic was able to take the lead early on at 6-1. But the Americans did not give up the chase and closed in the gap at 8-7. The Dominican battled hard to extend their advantage
to 11-8 but the U.S stayed close at 12-11. The match found itself in a tie at 12-12 and then at 13-13. The Dominican Republic was able to move up ahead at 15-13 only to see the score levelled by the Americans yet again at 16-16. The first time that the U.S.
found itself leading in the set was at 19-18 but the Dominican Republic did not let it stay with their rivals for long and took it back at 20-19. However, it was the American side that was able to finish the opening set on their terms at 25-22.
The U.S started the second set better than the previous one as they had the lead at 6-5 but the Dominican Republic was in no mood to let the Americans get carried away and took the lead at 7-6 which they were able to extend till 11-8. Despite the fact that
the Americans tried to close in the gap, the Dominican Republic put on a spurt of speed and went ahead at 16-11. In the later stages of the set, the Americans found themselves leading at 24-22 which got them the win at 25-22.
The third set saw the Americans leading at 10-3 which they improved to 15-5. The Dominican Republic could not do much as the Americans sailed smoothly towards a set win at 25-10.
With their recent win, the U.S. squad has been able to improve their record to four wins against no loss whereas the Dominican Republic has been able to tally only one win so far but has suffered three defeats. The Americans are flying high on a 15 match
winning stream in the FIVB World Grand Prix, the first 11 of which were bagged in last year’s tournament.
