U.S. drops Bulgaria by 3-0 in FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship match
A Pool A match of the FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship took place between the U.S and the Bulgarians on 1st August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The venue for the competition was the Maracanazinho Gymnasium in a match that took three sets to
reach its end with the U.S coming up the winners by a large margin.
Bulgaria tried hard to muster a win but their efforts did not match the performance of the U.S. squad.The first set saw some intense moments but the U.S prevailed in bagging a win. The Bulgarians slackened a bit in the second set of the game but they put
in a renewed effort in the third set. However, the U.S did not let the match slip out of their hands and won the day at the following final set scores: 25-22, 25-18 and 25-21.
The head coach of the American squad, John Hawks IV, expressed himself in the following words at the press conference after the match had ended: “We served very well and I am very satisfied with that. The Bulgarian are very tall and we needed to serve well
to play against them. Ball control and speed were the keys for our win”.
On the other hand, the Bulgarian head coach, Nikolay Jeliazkov, gave the following statements: “We could have played better in spiking and blocking, specially. Six points in blocking is too few for our team. I wish we can play better in the second match”.
The start of the first set of the game saw the U.S side take the lead at 4-1. However, the Bulgarians did not let the Americans get too far ahead and were able to tie the score. In a disappointing turn of events for the Bulgarians, Zlatan Yordanov experienced
an injury and had to leave the court but Bulgaria did not give up the struggle and made the match reach another tie at 17-17. However, it did not stop the U.S. squad from finishing the set on their terms at 25-22.
The second set of the game saw the Americans take the lead at 13-10 but the Bulgarians kept on the chase until they had tied the score. Unfortunately for the Bulgarians, the Americans did not let the wheel slip out of their hands and won the second set at
25-18.
The third set saw the Americans in a leading position at 11-9. The Bulgarians could not keep up the chase and eventually the gap increased until the set ended in an American win at 25-21.
American Taylor Sander was able to make the most points in both the teams by scoring 15 of them. The Bulgarian who kept the score board of his team ticking was Nikolay Penchev, who tallied 11 points.
