Why would the United States choose to give Egypt so much assistance in the year 2002?

I am really confused on this question. Please help. Thank you SO much.

  1. It may have been due to political backroom deals between the two governments.

    The U.S. may have offered extensive aid to Egypt if they would help out in the ongoing peace process in the middle east, or to stay out of a situation the Americans could see developing over there.
