The 2011 Quebec Open Jeep Beach Volleyball tournament has drawn fans attention toward Quebec this week. The International Beach Volleyball double-gender competition was kicked off on Tuesday, July 19 and will complete its length at the weekend. Right now
the double-elimination Main-Draw stage is underway. In the men’s section, four American duos entered the Main-Draw and clinched success in their respective matches. All four of them remained alive after the first rounds of the Main-Draw stage, which were played
on Thursday, July 21.
The following four U.S. tandems caught the spotlight yesterday:
Phil Dalhausser/ Todd Rogers Sean Scott/ John Hyden Jake Gibb / Sean Rosenthal Matt Fuerbringer/ Nick Lucena
Dalhausser/ Rogers
The top-seeded American duo of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers opened the day with a default win over compatriots Sean Scott and John Hyden. The other American duo failed to show up at the court on account of injury. As a result, Dalhausser/ Rogers earned
a bye in their first match.
Later in the day, they came across Brazil’s 16th-seeded pairing of Bruno Schmidt and Joao Luis Pianca Maciel. The American team was fully prepared to take on their rivals as they exhibited a great performance and held off Bruno-Maciel for a 2-0
(21-14, 21-18) victory in 39 minutes. The U.S. was quick in adding scores via kill shots and deadly spikes. They secured the opening set with a margin of seven points and repeated the same act in the following set.
The pumped-up U.S. team is scheduled to take on eighth-seeded Thiago Santos Barbosa and Harley Marques Silva on Friday in the third round of the Main-Draw stage.
Scott/ Hyden
The tandem of Scott and Hyden missed the action in the opening match but came back strong in the next match. They were challenged by Great Britain’s Steven Grotowski and Josh Garcia-Thopson in the consolation match. The American hotshots didn’t allow the
GB players to stay idle on their feet and claimed victory over them in 38 minutes. The U.S. pair posted 2-0 (21-16, 21-13) on the board to earn a win. In the next run, they will put up against Jason Lochhead and Kirk Pitman of New Zealand in the consolation
match today, July 22.
Jake Gibb/ Sean Rosenthal
The fifth-seeded American pair had the task of overcoming the challengers from Canada. Gibb/ Rosenthal saw the 28th-seeded Canadian duo of Maverick Hatch and Sam Schachter. The home team couldn’t penetrate the power of fast spikes and accepted
defeat in 32 minutes. The American team polled 2-0 (21-17, 21-13) and claimed their first match.
In the second match, Gibb/ Rosenthal faced 21st-seeded Swedish team of Stefan Gunnarsson and Hannes Brinkborg. This was a comparatively tougher match as the Swedish players put up a great fight. However, they fought well but ended up losing 0-2
(19-21, 15-21) after a two-set game. Gibb/ Rosenthal will take on Brazilian Moises Neilton Santos and Alvaro Morais Filho in third round of Main-Draw on Friday.
