U.S men’s volleyball team defeats Puerto Rico by 3-0 to head to FIVB World League Final Round
After having defeated the Puerto Rican squad by 3-2 on Friday, July 1st, the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team went on to assert themselves by making a clean sweep over their rivals on Saturday, July 2nd, in the FIVB World League
tournament match that was being held at Walter Pyramid. This has paved the way for the Americans to make their way into the Final round.
The first set of the match was a piece of cake for the American side as they won it by quite a margin but the Puerto Ricans woke up in the second set to bring the scores close, though they could not secure a win. The third set saw a half-hearted effort being
put in from the Puerto Rican side which eventually cost them the match. The U.S. squad was able to win at the following final set scores: 25-13, 25-22 and 25-19.
With their recent win, the Americans have been able to improve their pool play record to show a total of eight wins with four defeats. They will now be heading to Poland where the final round of the competition will unfold. The Americans are trailing behind
the Brazilians in the Pool A. Brazil leads the group with an impressive number of 10 wins scrapped off at the cost of incurring just two losses.
Unfortunately for the Puerto Rican squad, the FIVB tournament did not fare well for them as the Puerto Ricans have not been able to manage a single win and will be going home cradling a total of 12 defeats.
Sharing the first position along with Brazil in the pool matches are Russia, Argentina and Italy. Teams other than the U.S. squad that have earned a ticket to Poland to play in the final round that is scheduled to be played on 6th to 10th
of July are Cuba, Bulgaria as well as Poland.
The head coach of the American team made the following comments after his team has won the match against the Puerto Ricans: “We’re happy to be moving on. Our goal at the beginning of World League was to get better every match and qualify for the Final Round
and we’ve done that.”
Reid Priddy, the outside hitter on the U.S. squad, was able to register the highest number of points on both teams. Priddy tallied a total of 13 kills that were supported by one block and an ace. He was helped by team-mate Clay Stanley, who added six kills
of his own and contributed by making two blocks and serving two aces as well.
On the Puerto Rican side, Carlos Ortiz was able to lead by adding 12 points to his side of the score board. Ortiz was able to accomplish this by making eight kills and four blocks.
The U.S. men’s volleyball team will leave for Poland on Sunday, July 3rd.
