U.S. sweeps Canada in a NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship match
The U.S women’s national volleyball team had a match with the Canadian squad on Tuesday, September 13. The contest was part of the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship that is currently being held in Caguas, Puerto Rico. By the time the day was done,
the Americans had made a clean sweep over their rivals.
The first two sets of the game were dominated by the Americans. It was only in the third set that the pressure of an imminent sweep triggered the efforts of the Canadians. However, they still did not succeed in stopping the Americans from winning the match
at the following final set scores: 25-19, 25-19 and 25-23.
The U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach, Hugh McCutcheon, expressed his feelings in the following manner after the match had reached its close: “I thought Canada played a good match. I thought we were good in a couple phases of the game. Offensively, we
could have been cleaner at the net. It was an okay start to the tournament, but we need to be better tomorrow."
On the other hand, the Canadian coach Arnd Ludwig made these statements: “Congratulations to USA – they played really well today. We had a better performance today than yesterday, and I am happy overall with our performance.”
The opening set of the game got the Americans into a leading position at 5-3 early on but Canada did not hold back and tied the match at 7-7. The Americans were able to take the lead again at 10-7 and stretch it to 16-12. The Canadian side tried to close
in the gap at 23-19 but the Americans did not look back as they went in for a first set win at 25-19.
The second set saw the Americans leading at 3-1 but Canada was able to close in the gap at 5-4. By the time that the first technical time out came, the Canadians were leading at 8-6. After both the teams came back onto the courts, the Americans found themselves
with the advantage at 11-8. The Canadians got close enough at 11-10 but fell into making errors that pushed the Americans at 15-10. The Americans were going strong at 21-14 when the Canadians sped up till 21-18 but the U.S side went ahead to bag the second
set at 25-19.
The Canadians got themselves the lead at 7-5 in the third set but the Americans took advantage of the Canadians errors and got ahead at 11-8. The Americans were able to extend their advantage and move on to a 19-10 lead. The Canadians put on a good show
and propelled themselves forward to close in the gap at 23-22. Unfortunately for the Canadian side, the Americans did not give them way and secured the third set at 25-23.
