U.S. sweeps Peru in Pool B match of XVI Pan American Games - Volleyball
The second match of the United States Women’s Volleyball team in the XVI Pan American Games took place on the Sunday, October 16, as they took on Peru. Both sides found themselves in Pool B of the tournament which is currently being staged in Guadalajara,
Mexico. The venue of the competition was the Avila Camacho Sport Complex.
The Americans were able to win for the second time in the tournament after making a clean sweep over their opponents. The first set of the match started off with both teams almost even but as the frame progressed, the Americans were able to propel themselves
forward and win the opening set. The second set was dominated by the Americans who did not give the Peruvians any chance of controlling the match. However, Peru was able to step up their game in the third set but the Americans prevailed in bagging a win and
sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-19, 25-15 and 25-19.
The coach of the American team, Andy Banachowski, expressed himself in the following words after the match had reached its close: “I was very pleased with my team performance today. Our young team is getting better. I think we improved overall today. Peru
gave us a very tough match; I am happy how we reacted In pass and attack much better than yesterday.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Peruvian team Luca Cristofani, shared his feelings in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “To win this match, we should have more attention in some things
in particular. We made a lot of mistakes in very simple things. In this match we could not allow that. With a team like ours, shorter in height, we should do better other things, but I am satisfied with the reception and defense.”
The player that was able to tally the most points in the match overall was the American Lauren Gibbemeyer who tallied a total of 13 points while the most active Peruvian player was Mirtha Uribe as she was able to put up a total of 11 points in the entire
match.
The Americans were also able to dominate the Peruvians in terms of blocking. The number of blocks that the Americans managed to pull off were 11 in all while the Peruvians could only manage two in the entire match. On the other hand, the number of errors
that Peru committed were 20 in all. The Americans played better by making only 14 errors.
