U.S. sweeps Puerto Rico in first round of Pan American Games - Volleyball
The opening match for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team in the Pan American Games took place on the 15th October, Saturday against Puerto Rico in Guadalajara, Mexico. The Americans were able to make a clean sweep over the Puerto Ricans
ande grab a win inthe first round of the tournament.
Not only did the US manage to win the match in three back to back sets, they did so by securing each frame quite comfortably. The scoreboard showed the following final set scores: 25-17, 25-18 and 25-14.
The U.S. Head Coach, Andy Banachowski, made the following comments at the press conference after his team had won the match: “I think today, our blocking defence worked well for us. But I have been very pleased with the progress of our back line, too.”
On the other hand, the captain of the US team, Cynthia Barboza, expressed herself in the following manner: “There are more rookies (in this Pan American Games) than in the past. We have a good group and a really strong zone. Everything has been great.”
The opening set of the match saw the Americans take the lead at 2-0 and they still had the advantage with the coming of the first technical time out at 8-4. The Puerto Ricans kept on the chase but the Americans put on a 7-0 run that propelled them forwards
to a first set win at 25-17.
The second set began with the Puerto Ricans leading at 8-4 but the Americans did not let them get too far and tied the score at 13-13, with another tie being reached at 15-15. However, the Americans did not let the frame slip out of their hands and secured
the second set at 25-18.
The third set also saw the U.S Women leading at 8-4. The Puerto Ricans could not do much except trial behind all the way to an American win at 25-14.
The player that was able to score the most points among both teams was the American Angie Forsett as she tallied a total of 12 points by registering eight kills as well as four blocks.
Overall, the Americans were able to outperform the Puerto Rican side. The American team managed to stick to eight errors in the entire match while the Puerto Ricans made a significant number of 23 errors. Apart from that, the Americans were also able to
tally more service aces than the Puerto Ricans.
Next in line for the Americans is a match against the Peruvian team.
