U.S. sweeps Trinidad and Tobago in Pool B: NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship
The U.S. women’s national volleyball team had a match with Trinidad and Tobago on September 14th in Caguas, Puerto Rico. The resulting battle between the two sides did not take long to reach its end as the Americans made a clean sweep over the
Trinidad and Tobago squad in the last match of Pool B of the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship.
The match was pretty much a one sided affair with the Americans completely dominating the Trinidad and Tobago squad from the beginning until the end. As a result the final set scores stood at the following figures: 25-14, 25-16 and 25-11.
The head coach of the American squad, Hugh McCutcheon, made the following comments at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “I was very happy with our team's performance, and both teams played hard. I think it is
important to respect the game by always playing hard. I thought we improved from yesterday and were pretty clean (in terms of errors). Trinidad & Tobago put up a nice block against us.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Trinidad and Tobago team expressed himself by giving the following statements: “I think we are lucky to continue having the opportunities to play against one of the best teams in the world in the United States.”
The opening set started off with a Trinidad and Tobago leading at 4-2 that they were able to extend till 7-5. However, the Americans grabbed the advantage for themselves at 14-9 and sped up ahead at 19-10. The gap between the score led to a decrease in the
confidence of the Trinidad and Tobago players and they fell to making errors that made it easy for the Americans to bag the first set at 25-14.
Trinidad and Tobago was able to start off the second set with a lead at 6-4 but the Americans did not take long in getting the advantage at 10-9, which their rivals neutralised at 10-10. The score was close at 19-15 in favour of the Americans but after that
point the U.S. squad sped up to secure another win at 25-16.
It was the Americans that were leading the third set 4-1 early on but Trinidad and Tobago tied the frame at 6-6. But the second technical time out saw the Americans leading at 16-6, an advantage they did not let go off till they had bagged a win at 25-11.
Even though the team lost the match, the Trinidad and Tobago player, Krystle Esdelle, was able to post the highest number of points in the match at 12.
The Americans have been able to get themselves the most points in the pool at 12. They have been able to accomplish this by bagging two wins and not undergoing a single loss.
