U.S. wins bronze in Boys’ Youth Under-19 Pan American Cup - Volleyball
The bronze medal match of the Boys’ Youth Under-19 Pan American Cup took place on Saturday, July 16, in Mexicali, Mexico. The U.S. took on the home team of Mexico and won by a clean sweep over their opponents.
The first set of the match was a close call as the Mexicans played energetically, spurred on by the local crowd. However, in the second set of the game, the Americans were able to win by a significant margin. The Mexicans stepped up their game in the third
set but it was not enough to stop the Americans from sealing the deal. The final set scores stood at the following figures at the end of the match: 25-23, 25-19 and 25-21.
The first set of the match saw the U.S. take the lead at 2-0 but the Mexicans had no intentions of trailing behind as the equalised the score at 3-3. The match reached another tie at 5-5 after which the Americans put on a spurt of speed that gave them back
the advantage at 14-8. The Mexicans were able to close in the gap by taking the score to 15-11 but they could not take the advantage as the U.S. still had the lead at 20-19. Eventually, the Americans were able to bag the opening set of the game at 25-21.
Capitalising on the momentum generated by winning the first set of the game, the Americans were able to start the second set strong and keep the advantage with themselves at 3-2 that extended to 8-5. The Mexicans seemed to have lost their hold on the game
as they fell to committing errors that brought up the score of the Americans to 10-5. The Mexicans were not able to significantly challenge the Americans as they took their lead to 20-13. The Mexicans tried to catch up but the Americans were not unstoppable
as they bagged the second set at 25-19.
Playing with a two set deficit seemed to rouse the Mexican team’s spirits as they were able to take the lead in the third set at 7-6. However, the Americans did not let their opponents get away with the advantage and came up from behind to lead at 13-11.
The match reached a tie at 14-14 and then again at 15-15. The two teams remained neck to neck until the final stages of the set when the Americans registered the final points by taking the third and final set of the game at 25-21.
The bronze medal win has enabled the Americans to tally a total of three wins after suffering two losses. On the other hand, the Mexicans have finished off the tournament by bagging two wins and an equal number of defeats.
